About Us

Who are we? What do we do?

We are a group of teenagers, having avid interest in raising awareness towards helping children left behind - both abandoned orphans and children in villages whose parents are migrant workers working in cities.

We have especially been impressed and influenced by a great woman and a great organisation. Her name is Jenny Bowen, and the organisation is called OneSky Foundation. Ms. Jenny Bowen founded OneSky during the late 1990s to nurture orphans in mainland China. OneSky was for a long time named “Half the Sky (HTS)”, as there was a saying “Women hold up half the sky”. However, this was not the case in China, and girls take up nearly 96% of orphanages.

In 2012, HTS’ 50+ orphanage centers were transferred to Chunhui Children which is independently registered in mainland China. To know more about Ms. Jenny Bowen’s story on founding OneSky, you may read her amazing book “Wish You Happy Forever: What China's Orphans Taught Me About Moving Mountains.”

So, what exactly do we do here? Well, here at Shine, we do two main things: Auctioning the paintings and artworks created by those talented left-behind children, as well as The Learning Square, where we post our writing shares, monthly book recommendations and wushu martial arts tutorials. We're doing this virtually because the Covid-19 pandemic has made it impossible for us to hold galas to raise funding and travel to orphanages and villages to provide tutorials and learning resources in person.

Mira Lu

Chief Manager

"Hi, I am Mira, an 7th grader from Hong Kong. I have many other hobbies, including playing the piano, playing netball, swimming, squash, reading, drawing, as well as creative writing in both English and Chinese.
I want to help girls in orphanages of OneSky Foundation to strive and live better lives. I believe that all children have the potential to succeed. Through my idea of auctioning paintings drawn by the orphans of One Sky and my learning tutorials, I aim to support the children as much as possible, help them improve their lives, and most of all, help them strive for their passions and dreams."

Nora Lu

Assistant Manager

"HELLO! I'm Nora. I am an optimistic and creative 5th grader from Hong Kong. I like sports, and I play Wushu, which has become a big part of my life now that I am in the Hong Kong Wushu team. I also love reading and writing--especially on fantasy topics. I find happiness in playing the ukulele and guitar, too, learning independently on YouTube.
I care about the children who are orphans. I believe that everyone is equal, and that they have a spark in them. I also believe that orphans can be as good or even better than those who are not.
I want to provide free lessons for orphans and help them become the best they could be."
